Kenneth • DMDC Customer Care Representative • Ft. Knox

I was deployed to Iraq in 2004 as a Lance Corporal with the Marines. While providing security for the base General, I came under attack by small arms fire and an IED, which detonated under his truck killing the team leader and critically injuring the remaining passengers, including myself. I was thrown from the vehicle, but mustered the strength to provide aide to my fellow Marines. As a result of this event, I have shrapnel in my upper lip that was never removed, as the heat of the metal cauterized my lip closed. The event also led to chronic back pain and other mobility issues. I was awarded the Purple Heart by the President of the United States of America on December 28th, 2004 for wounds received in combat and my bravery to continue fighting while assisting my fellow soldiers who were also injured.

I experienced extreme difficulties finding employment after I left the military. As much as I tried, I wasn’t able to convince employers that my military experience would transfer over well to the civilian sector. With no military retirement to fall back, there was a financial need to continue to provide for my family. Under this pressure, I moved my family all around trying to locate long term employment that would allow me to stabilize and have an opportunity for growth and advancement in an office setting. Eventually, I learned about InspiriTec through a friend and applied for a Ft Knox, KY based position, even though I was still living in New York. It would mean another move, but I was optimistic and willing to uproot the family for a quality opportunity. I was hired by InspiriTec’s Ft Knox team in September 2015 to provide customer service for Veterans and their families to help them sign up to view and/or make changes to their benefits – part of the DMDC Consolidated Contact Center project.

Though my military experience gave me a strong foundational set of skills, I struggled some with having to learn the technical side and the verbiage to be able to assist customers with their computer issues. However, I worked very hard during training and overcame my challenges with the support of our InspiriTec case managers. Due to my disabilities, I am physically in so much pain I cannot walk on occasion. InspiriTec has assisted by allowing me to make up the time on my days off. This helps me make sure I’m not losing anything financially, which is needed to take care of my family of six. I am a father of four children (daughter 5, son is 3, daughter 2 and step son 14), one being Autistic and one having a speech delay. I spend time trying to work with them and help them learn.

I have overcome many challenges moving my family from New York to Kentucky to find substantial employment and a lower cost of living. I have special needs children that require much of my time and attention, but still manage to come to work and share skills with others. I’m a people person who listens to anyone who needs an ear and talk through challenging caller scenarios. I hope that my coworkers see me as someone who is willing to listen to others, provide advice, and be the calm voice of reason. This job with InspiriTec allows me to be a vital member a team with an important mission to serve others, while taking on new challenges.
