Princy Mathew • Lead CSR and Trainer Pennsylvania Department of Health and Human Services, ACA Consumer Services Center • Philadelphia

My name is Princy Mathew. I was born and raised in India and then later immigrated to the United States when I was 18 years old. My passion is helping and caring for people, so I pursued a degree in Nursing; however, my life changed due to an accidental fall in 2009, leaving me permanently disabled. The first two years after my injury were overwhelmingly difficult. I was completely dependent on my family and had to rely on others to help me. For someone who wanted to help others and now I had to be the one being helped, it was depressing. But I had to accept this, and eventually I did with the help from OVR. I had made contact with OVR through my inpatient counselor from the hospital. My priority was to find a job, and soon enough they helped me apply for a CSR position at InspiriTec. When I got the position, the heavy weight of being a burden to others slowly subsided. Working at InspiriTec made me feel independent and in control, which is something I struggled heavily with. I had the opportunity to work on a couple of projects at InspiriTec in the first few years. At first I found it physically challenging working full time, but luckily I had great support from my mangers and my social workers. For an example, as a paraplegic person I have my limitations to take short breaks while I am on my schedules for my needs. I received accommodations for things, such as allowing me to take longer breaks due to medical reasons. The staff were also incredibly understanding when it came to transportation, as I had to fully rely on CCT which was always unreliable. At times the CCT would be hours late but someone would still stay with me. InspiriTec really helped me reach my true potential and helped me get back on my feet. It is a relief working with great, supportive people around.

I am hopeful that I can be an inspiration for the people who are paraplegic or disabled like me and wants to be more independent. InspiriTec is a place not just focused on your disability or your limitations, but rather it’s more on helping you to grow and become more independent. I am thankful for InspiriTec for giving me the confidence I need to happily live my life without feeling tied down.
