I was born with Muscular Dystrophy, a condition where my muscles deteriorate over time. After graduating from Ramapo College in 2012, I didn’t find work for two years. Few companies want to hire someone who is a potential liability and will miss work for medical reasons. Many of my friends, and other people I relied on, were moving out of New Jersey at this time too. Perhaps the moment that most defined my struggles during these two years was when I totaled my accessible vehicle while looking for employment. My job search ended when the New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services connected me with InspiriTec, and I started as a Customer Service Representative (CSR) on the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs (DCA) project. CSRs for DCA provide customer service to professionals holding various licenses in the state. The people at InspiriTec care for one another in a way you do not see in most offices; there’s a high level of empathy and understanding. I remember one morning, on my way into the office, my wheelchair’s battery died. Ryan, my manager, came out to push me inside. This was a huge deal for me. How often does a manager drop whatever they’re doing to help a coworker? The management style at InspiriTec inspired me to think about advancing my knowledge and education in business management. Working at InspiriTec gave me renewed purpose and the ability to move forward. I felt I was finally building a life for myself, despite my limitations.
