Vinny • Customer Service Representative • Newark

On September 11, 2001 I was in the South Tower of the World Trade Center complex preparing for a meeting with my coworkers. I was a manager with AT&T’s business development team at the time and was putting the finishing touches on a presentation when a couple of my coworkers left the room. That was the last time I saw them. The last thing I can remember about that day is falling several stories as the entire building came down. Somehow, pieces of the rubble formed a canopy over me that provided a sort of shelter and prevented further damage to my body. I could not tell you how long I was trapped there because I was unconscious. For the first two months that I was in the hospital, I was listed as John Doe, and my family had no way of finding me. I awoke after a seven or eight month coma and wasn’t immediately told what had happened to me because my doctors feared that I’d go into cardiac arrest at the news. Moving forward from this traumatic experience was a struggle. In addition to broken bones and nerve damage throughout my body, I experienced periods of depression and anxiety. I was able to walk again about six months after waking from the coma, but I did not work for 15 years and instead stayed home to raise my nephew. Eventually, I got tired of sitting at home on medical leave and wanted to find my own means of providing for my nephew and myself. I knew I wanted a job, but I was not sure where I could find one that could accommodate my medical needs. I started working at InspiriTec in May of 2016, and the people here understood my condition from the beginning. Thanks to InspiriTec, I’m able to work and provide for myself again for the first time in years. Working in an environment where others around me overcome their struggles on a daily basis has given me strength I did not know I still had.
